What each one actually is
Wax is a soft, sacrificial layer — usually carnauba-based — sitting on top of the clear coat. It looks warm and glossy, and it wears away on purpose, which is exactly why it needs reapplying every 6-10 weeks. Ceramic coating is a semi-permanent layer that chemically bonds to the paint itself rather than just sitting on it, which is why it lasts years instead of weeks and why it's applied once rather than topped up.
Durability
This is the biggest practical difference. A quality wax gives genuine protection for around 6-8 weeks before it starts breaking down — noticeably, water stops beading as tightly and the paint loses some depth. Our own Essential Exterior package includes a paint sealant rated for 1-2 months. A full ceramic coating holds up for around 12 months of daily driving before it needs attention again. Signature Exterior sits between the two: a ceramic sealant rated for 2-4 months, applied to paint that has first been decontaminated.
Look and feel
Wax has a specific warmth to it that some owners genuinely prefer, especially on darker colours — it's a soft, slightly "wet" look. Ceramic coating tends to read as more of a hard, glassy gloss, and it doesn't fade or thin out the way wax does as it wears. Neither is objectively better here; it's closer to a personal preference, at least until the wax starts wearing unevenly.
Day-to-day upkeep
This is where ceramic coating earns its keep. Coated paint sheds water, dust and light grime noticeably faster — a quick rinse does more work than it would on bare or waxed paint, and bugs and tar wipe off instead of needing to be scrubbed. Waxed paint needs more regular attention to keep that protection meaningfully intact, since the layer itself is thinner and wears with every wash.
Cost, honestly
Wax is cheaper per application but needs reapplying every 6-10 weeks to keep working — those costs add up over a year. Ceramic coating costs more as a single job but is a once-a-year (or less) expense after that. For a car that's kept for a few years, ceramic coating is usually the cheaper option over time, not just the more convenient one.
So which one
If you're not sure how long you're keeping the car, or you like the ritual of a regular wax and don't mind the upkeep, wax is a genuinely fine choice — it's what Essential Exterior is built around. If you're keeping the car for years, parking outside, or just want the paint properly protected without thinking about it every couple of months, a dedicated ceramic coating is the better long-term call. Between our own two levels, the difference is shorter: Essential lays down a paint sealant for 1-2 months, Signature decontaminates the paint first and applies a ceramic sealant rated for 2-4 months.
